Sudden Cardiac Arrest: Understanding the Causes, Symptoms, and Emergency Response
Happy American Heart Month and Women’s Heart Health Week!
Did you know that sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in the United States for female athletes? Luckily, it is also one of the most preventable.
That's why this February, we're spreading awareness about the importance of knowing the warning signs of sudden cardiac arrest, and what to do if you or someone you know experiences it.
Here are a few quick facts to help you remember what to look out for:
Sudden cardiac arrest is not the same as a heart attack. A heart attack is caused by a blocked blood flow to the heart, while sudden cardiac arrest is caused by an electrical malfunction in the heart.
The most common warning sign of sudden cardiac arrest is a sudden loss of consciousness. Other signs include chest pain, shortness of breath, and seizures.
If you suspect someone is experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, call 911 immediately and start CPR if you are trained. Every second counts!
Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) can be used to shock the heart back into a normal rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest. Be on the lookout for them and know how to use them.
